Capuchin Monkey

Lazy Monkey
Have you ever seen a white and black monkey? If so, did you know what type it was? If you guessed a capuchin monkey, you are correct.
The top of the head and the body of capuchin monkeys are black. Sometimes the body is brown. Did you know this? Different kinds of capuchin monkeys have different skulls inside so their heads might be different shapes. Isn’t that cool? They have long arms, grasping (holding) hands and tails that help them live on the trees.
Capuchin monkeys are very light. They only weigh 3-9 pounds. That means it could be lighter than a newborn baby! That is weird but it's true! Also from toe to head they're 13-22 inches tall. Their tail is 15-22 inches long. Isn’t that cool?
Capuchin monkeys are very flexible (meaning it’s easy for them to bend or flex).
They're different kinds of capuchin monkeys. There is white-headed, black, Ecuadorian, karopi, wedge-capped, tufted and guiana brown, etc…There are 29 species (a class of animals) of capuchin monkeys.
Capuchin monkeys really like to sleep. They are diurnal, or animals that sleep in the night. But don't go near that lazy monkey because you will interrupt its sleep and he'll bite you.
He’s an Actor
Who wants to jump high? I do because capuchin monkeys jump really high. They could jump up to 9 feet. That's insane!
Did you know that they're really smart? They use things in nature as tools to refer as weapons or gather food.
Another thing about capuchin monkeys is their face changes colors from white to pink.
Capuchin monkeys are agile, which means they move quickly. They are also arboreal (found on trees). Capuchin monkeys can leap from one branch to another. Sometimes they swing and climb. Also, these monkeys wrap around trees. Every day they spend time in the trees looking for some scrumptious food. Mmm!
Now do you want to jump high like a capuchin monkey? Well I don’t think you could jump that high, but good luck.
Greedy One
Ump, ump, ump! That’s a capuchin monkey eating a nut. Every morning they search for food to eat. They go up to the canopy (top of the rainforest) to look for fruits, nuts, flowers and leaves. They are omnivores (animals that eat both plants and other animals). Sometimes they search for bananas (and other fruits), insects, eggs, young birds, frogs, or lizards. If a food is hard to find, another capuchin monkey will help it. After the food is found, they share their prey (what they eat).
Capuchin monkeys are always looking for food 24/7. They run like a bat swooping to its prey. Imagine this, if you were a capuchin monkey, which prey would you eat? Do you want insects or young birds? Whichever you choose, eat that mouthwatering food. But don’t go near that greedy monkey and take its food, because if you do, he or she will eat you for dinner.
Aww, a Baby is Born!
Look! A baby capuchin monkey is born. It is as cute as a puppy. After a baby is born it come on the mother’s back for a couple years of its life. A female bears (gives birth to) one baby at a time every 1-2 years. Once they reproduce, or make babies, female capuchin monkeys are pregnant for 160-180 days before their babies are born. The babies are sticky and waxy once they are born. How disgusting! For some reason, the lazy male capuchin monkeys don’t take care of their babies. How rude! Most capuchin monkeys live for around 30-40 years.
Now as I was saying, capuchin monkeys are in the New World Monkey family (Genus Cebus). There are 5 different monkey families. The family that the capuchin monkeys are in is the Cebidae family.
Now do you know about the life cycle? I don’t think so! I’m just kidding!
Dead Monkeys Happily Ever After, Or Not?
Bye, Bye, New World Monkeys. New World Monkeys have a lot of predators (an animal that eats another animal or plant). Capuchin monkeys are new world monkeys. Some New World Monkeys are endangered species (risk of extinction). They have nine predators. Those nine are jaguars, any kind of bird that is bigger than the monkey, army ants, ocelots, bigger monkeys, snakes, cougars, and humans. Humans hunt them for a delicious dinner. Humans slice capuchin monkeys like a string bean getting cut. Isn’t that scaring you?
Even though some capuchin monkeys have a lot of predators, it is not an endangered species yet. The main predator for the tufted capuchin is the harpy eagle.
Don’t worry, capuchin monkeys are not extinct (no longer seen). If you see a capuchin monkey, warn them about their predators!
A Nice and Shady Place for the Lazy Monkey
Imagine a place where it’s not quiet, everything is loud. You’re relaxing. Well, the capuchin monkey lives in this loud place. They like to relax in a place near the equator (the center of the earth) and sleep in the trees like a relaxed person. Do you know where this is? If you guessed somewhere besides the Amazon, you’re wrong. If you guessed the Amazon, you’re correct. It’s their habitat (where they live). The Amazon is a rainforest with a river called the Amazon River. The Amazon has an abundant amount of trees. The trees are 150 feet tall. That’s insane!
Well, capuchin monkeys also live in Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia. These are all countries in South America. In the Amazon rainforest they sleep and relax in the shade. Ahh! They’re having a great time in the shade.
In the Amazon, the capuchin monkeys look for delicious food. Mmmm!
Have you been to the Amazon? I don’t think so! If you go there look for the capuchin monkey!
