Tarantula

Where Are You? Home Sweet Home.
Did you know there are many species (types) of tarantulas? Tarantulas are one kind of very large spider. In the Amazon rainforest the three most common tarantulas are the pink toed tarantula, the red tarantula, and the black tarantula. Pink toed tarantulas have pink toes, but the red tarantula is like you flattened your hair and dyed it light red and the black one will disappear in the dark like a needle in a haystack. Those are three of the most common tarantulas in the rainforest, but there are a wide variety of other species.
Tarantulas live in many places. Some live underground, under bushes, and on the trees. Many people think they only live in webs. That’s called a misconception (something we believe to be true). The places they live actually benefit (help) them with food. When they land on the ground, bugs will naturally be there and the tarantulas can sense them. Then they just pop out and get them! That’s why they eat at home sweet home.
Have you ever tried to keep a tarantulas as a pet? Well if you ask me I strongly recommend you do research before you bring it into your home because a change of environment might kill it.
Watch out!
Have you ever been bitten by a red tarantula? Well if you’re reading this you probably weren’t, because a red tarantula’s bite can kill you if you don’t get treatment! You should keep reading in case it ever happens to you. The tarantula injects the venom into its prey (what it eats), then it waits until the prey’s skin is breaking apart like dirt in murky water, and then it slurps the blood out like a fancy soup.
If you get bitten by a tarantula:
1. Remove dirt with soap and water to prevent infection.
2. Put small amounts of meat tenderizer and a few drops of water to make a paste.
3. Apply the paste with a cotton ball and hold it on top of the bite.
4. If you don’t have meat tenderizer use an ice cube to stop the swelling and you will feel better by the next day.
5. Don’t panic! Despite what you have seen or heard, tarantula bites aren’t usually fatal unless you’re allergic. If you are, take an antihistamine immediately and call 911!
Ready or Not, Here I Come!
“Speaking of food, I want a bite.” Sorry, Tara Tarantula talking. Its prey (what it eats) is crickets, millipedes, birds, boa constrictor babies, and giant leaf cockroaches. These animals are edible and delicious to eat for a tarantula. Did you know that tarantulas are omnivores? (They eat meat and plants, like leaves.)
Aaaaaahhhh!!!
Large centipedes and big birds eat the tarantula. They are the tarantula’s predators.Centipedes and tarantulas will have a battle to see who wins, but centipedes always win. I think it wins because of its long body. Did you know centipedes can kill a tarantula easily? All the centipede has to do is wrap its body around the tarantula and then bite it. The tarantula will say, “ok that’s enough.” So centipedes get a tasty meal. That’s all they need to know.
Some humans eat tarantulas. We are the greatest threat (enemy) to tarantulas. We eat them and we stomp on them. But what we don’t know is that some make ideal pets. (That means the best dream pet.)
If the mother boa constrictor finds the tarantula eating her babies it will consume (eat) the tarantula whole!
I’m All About That Life
Have you ever thought males tarantulas live longer than females? Well if you guessed yes, you should keep reading, because that is incorrect!
Female tarantulas can live up to 40 years! On the other hand, males usually die after mating. They both have one thing in common, they shed! They shed their hair and exoskeleton (skeleton on the outside of their body) on the last day of winter. In the spring they grow but the hair is smaller and it lets more cold air in.
The life cycle of a tarantula starts with an egg sac (a warm ball of cotton with 200 eggs inside.) Then the baby tarantulas come out of the egg sac like one hundred people trying to get out of a door at the same time! Then they grow older and mate (find a partner) and the cycle starts again!
