What Do Spider Monkeys Look Like?
Have you ever wondered how spider monkeys look? Well, they have long, lanky arms like sloths and prehensile (strong grip) tails that enable them to move gracefully from branch to branch. Spider monkeys have glossy (smooth) hair that covers their entire body. They also can have red, black, and brown fur.
Did you know they have a cool patch of skin on their tail that helps them have grip ability? I didn’t.
Did you also know they have long nails and big eyes that can be brown or black? I didn’t.
Now, don’t you think spider monkeys are amazing? I do.
Going Crazy
Have you ever wondered how spider monkeys live an awesome life? Well now you’re going to know if you just keep reading, and I suggest you keep reading! Also, here’s a fact for you to just get started, female spider monkeys do more of the leading role.
Did you know spider monkeys break into groups called bands to hunt? I didn’t. They also are diurnal animals (which means they sleep at night).
Did you also know, when they see danger they bark like terriers (small barking dogs)? I didn’t either. Also when they’re in fights with their predators (which means enemies) they would run away instead of fighting. If you want to get thrown at with branches, I suggest you go finding a spider monkey.
Now would you want to be a spider monkey? I know I would.
Deep Far in Their Habitat
Imagine yourself as a spider monkey living in the tropical rainforest of South America. How would you feel? I know I’d feel happy.
Did you know they occur as far north as Mexico, which means they can be found in Mexico to South America? I didn’t. They also like to live in tropical climates (which means average weather over a period of time), that are warm and rainy.
Did you also know some spider monkeys are losing their homes because trees are getting cut down? When I learned that, I felt sad. They’re on the verge (which means almost) of extinction (which means no more). Isn’t that mean?
They also live in the trees’ upper canopy (which means top layer of a tree) most of their life. Strange right? I thought they lived on the ground too.
Tell me again, how would you feel if you got to live in their habitat?
Colorful Birth
Have you ever wondered how female spider monkeys give birth to their babies? Well, they only give birth to a single baby every 2 to 5 years.
Female spider monkeys also carry their babies for 7.5 months (7 and a half months).
Did you know males sexually mature (become ready to make babies) at the age of 5 and girls 4? I didn’t.
Did you also know they live up to 27 years old on average? I didn’t. They also grow up till 50 cm tall. Strange right, I thought they could grow taller than that. The babies are also born black and when they’re adults they change color.
Now, would you want to be a female or male spider monkey? I know I would want to be a male spider monkey.
Beware the Forest / Ooh! Tasty
Have you ever wondered what eats spider monkeys? Well, did you know their predators are jaguars, crocodiles, boa constrictors, and indigenous (native) people? Strange right that people hunt them for food.
Have you ever wondered what spider monkeys eat? Well, they have an omnivorous diet (which means they eat meat and plants) and hunt with ease (which means easy).
Did you know they eat flowers, nuts, ripe fruit, insects, and small reptiles for protein? I didn’t. They can also tend to feed on leaves, aerial roots, bark, and wood.
Did you also know they can eat while hanging, climbing, or moving? I didn’t. They also can grab food with their tails. Cool, right?
Now, don’t you think spider monkeys have a lot of predators and a lot of prey? I do.
