The Flying Squirrel

What the “Flying” Squirrel Does
Do you think that squirrels can fly? Well they don’t…but…they can. I just wanted to talk about “flying” squirrels. Flying squirrels do not really fly. They’re actually using extra, loose skin called patagium so then they will glide. Their gliding is pretty much like a paper airplane. They can glide about 150 feet at a time, depending on the species. Species means different kinds of flying squirrels.
The flying squirrels have a big tail that they use for many things. They use it to keep them balanced while they glide. The squirrel’s tail also keeps them warm when it’s cold and they use it like parachutes when they fall off a tree. A flying squirrel will threaten another squirrel by flicking it with its tail.
Flying squirrels are also nocturnal. Nocturnal means an animal is active at night, able to see in the dark, and awake at night.
Where the “Flying” Squirrels Live
Do you think you know were the flying squirrels live? Well, I’ll tell you right now. They live in Asia, Europe, North and South America, in areas with temperate rainforest and lots of trees. (Temperate means not to hot or cold so it’s able to live in a warm place). It can also live in the mid-west and other warm places.
Most of the time they get their homes from birds that don’t live in there anymore, like woodpeckers and other birds. Flying squirrels may share their dens with other animals such as bats and screech owls.
How Flying Squirrels Look and Live
Flying squirrels reach 12 in. length (including the tail) and weigh between 4 and 6.5 ounces.
Flying squirrels have a life span (span means how long it lives for) of 12 years in captivity. (Captivity means being trapped or not in the wild). They also live up to 4 to 5 years in the wild. In spring and summer pups are born. Pups are little baby flying squirrels. Sometimes 2 to 7 pups are born at a time. Did you know any of this, because I didn’t until now.
Feast for the Beast
Hola hola hola, it’s me again. Did you know that flying squirrels have predators? A predator is an animal that eats another animal or plant. If you did know, you should have been here to help me out. The predators that the flying squirrel has are hawks, owls, eagles, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, snakes, birds, cats, and dogs.
What It Eats
Hey, last thing until the end, be happy because this one is short. Flying squirrels look for food by hanging from a tree with their claws, they also “fly” from tree to tree to find food.
The things that the flying squirrel eats are what most rodents (animals like flying squirrels and rats) eat. They are fruits, buds, insects, small birds, acorns, seeds, bugs, and nuts. This animal is omnivorous, which means it eats plants and animals. So now you know what it eats and by it I mean the flying squirrel.
