Ocelot
by Ezekiel
Do you know which animal in the cat family lives in the rainforest of South America, is a small wild cat, and eats birds, fish, monkeys, and turtles and is nocturnal? It is called an ocelot.
Guess Who
WOW! The ocelot has very big eyes and long whiskers. Its tan fur is covered with black and brown spots. Isn’t that cool and scary? Can you imagine an ocelot’s eyes staring at you!? But the very cool part about the ocelot’s fur is it can camouflage, which means something that blends in with something.
Do you know what gives ocelots their good vision? It’s because the ocelot’s eyes collect light to see better with a special layer on their eye, which is like to them walking in the dark is walking in the light. I wish I had that power.
Another thing about ocelots is that they have retractable claws, which means their claws can be pulled back inside their paws. It helps them climb trees and help pluck bird feathers.
Ocelots’ Lives
Ocelots are very solitary and territorial. Solitary means they live alone. Territorial means they urinate (pee pee) on their homes so they can use their scents (smell) so they can find their way home, and also so other ocelots won’t come in their homes. Ocelots live up to 20 years. They also can weigh up to 17-24 pounds but for their cubs they weigh a ½ a pound, and they stand 16-20 inches tall. That’s so amazing!
Um Let’s Eat
Whrr, om. Do you know what that sound was? It was the sound of a ocelot eating one of its prey. Ocelots eat monkeys. I know right, so gross! They also eat rats, spiny opossums, armadillos, anteaters, deer, squirrel, fish and others! They are omnivores. They eat meat and plants. They’re also very fast when they’re going to attack (to fight) their prey. To me that is cool.
RIP By Their Own Kind
Okay this might sound bad as if you got an F on your report card. Ocelots are eaten by their own kind, other cats! That’s sad and cold. Ocelots are eaten by jaguars, and pumas! They are also eaten by anacondas and the harpy eagle (a kind of eagle). They are also eaten by grizzly bears and alligators. And the last thing you should know is that humans hunt (to kill an animal) ocelots. I really, really think it’s time for ocelots to toughen up a lot. Do you agree? I mean you can’t just let birds pick on you like that man! And also ocelots, you can’t let monkeys bully you! Do you agree?
Ocelots Living the Life
Did you know that ocelots live in southern Texas (a state)? Hee ha! From Southern Texas. They also live in Central America to Northern Argentina in South America. I don’t know about you but that’s so amazing. But also if you came from fishing in Southern Texas watch out for an ocelot, it might take your big fish.
